The tip of the dagger bit into the flesh at my jugular, as I watched Hayes disappear from sight, then jerked when I felt Saskia run her free hand down my arm, her electricity stinging. When I refused to react to the sensations, she seemed to increase her power and I hissed out a snarl at the scent of my burning flesh.

I reached down for the axe at my waist, slashed at her hand and she staggered back, allowing me to turn and face her. My eyes were drawn again to the amulet that rested on her breastbone, then I lifted my gaze to hers.

Her gaze was murderous, pure hatred in her eyes for me as she ground out, “I don’t see why everyone likes you, you know. You are just another unremarkable looking human. Your power isn’t even all that special. And still the League fawns over you like you are their saviour.”

“That pisses you off, right? That I am more useful to the angels than you are?” I tossed at her, watching her recoil, her fist curling as if she itched to strike me.

“You might have Nathaniel fooled but I warmed his bed for decades and I could have him back with the click of my fingers. His infatuation with you will die out the moment you outlive your usefulness.”

I laughed, shaking my head. “Seems like Nathaniel was thrilled that you slept with Abraxas so he could finally have an excuse to be rid of you. A tad clingy, were you, Saskia? Bit of a bunny boiler? Ya, you defo seem the type.”

Saskia growled, taking another step closer to me, her dagger raised and a current of electricity leaping from her hand to the blade. If she sank that dagger into my chest, the strike alone might kill me but the shock of her electricity definitely would.

Without warning, I lashed out with my axe and knocked the dagger to the ground with a clang that enraged the angel. She surged forward and wrapped a hand around my throat, lifting me so that my toes barely scraped the ground. Her grip tightened and I struggled to breathe as she snatched the axe and thrust it in to the wall behind me, then slammed my back right beside it.

She leaned in close, her breath on my skin as she snarled, “He gave up his own bedroom for you. He has weapons fashioned to please you, and I see the way he looks at you. Even the damaged bastard seems to like you. What the fuck is so special about you, Raven Cassidy? What secrets are you hiding?”

I was sleeping in Nathaniel’s bedroom? That sure as hell was news to me.

Saskia sent a controlled burst of electricity through my body and I let loose a string of curses, trying to kick out my legs, hoping for a lucky shot but she avoided my kicks. I tried not to tremble as Saskia trailed a hand down my body, as if she was caressing a lover, and her hand rested over where my heart was thundering inside my chest.
